Description

In 1911, Robert Taggart Hall was able to produce lead-free, single-fire glazed china that was colorful, hard, strong, non-porous and craze-proof. In 1939 Westinghouse’s Ralph E. Kruck designed the "Refrigerator Leftover Dish." The designer gave the dish rounded edges in the popular 1930s Streamline Moderne style, a glamorous art deco aesthetic and worked exclusively with the Hall China Co to produce a line of items that would be included with the purchase of Westinghouse refrigerators. This same concept was extended in later years to the likes of Hotpoint, Sears, Montgomery Wards and others. The items made for leftovers were deep dishes with a shallow or flat china lid, all in a combination of rounded and squared-off shapes. Made in a variety of colors, the "General" design set offered in 1940 and 1941 as an accessory to Westinghouse refrigerators and found in garden green, sunset, yellow and delphinium. These pieces are in considerable demand by collectors today. The leftover dish measures 7.0”w x 4.5”d x 3.5”h and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or damage of any kind.
